17.08.2021 | SCHMIDTSCHE SCHACK - Full steam ahead for 111 years

SCHMIDTSCHE SCHACK: Full steam ahead for 111 years

Kassel, August 17, 2021 –This year Schmidtsche Schack, an Arvos Group Company, proudly looks back on 111 years of company history: At the beginning of the 20th century, the steam engine was the driving force behind global industrialization. Steam locomotives made it possible to cover distances on land that had previously seemed impossible in the shortest time and to accelerate the global flow of goods. 111 years ago, Wilhelm Schmidt therefore founded "Schmidt’sche Heißdampf mbh" in Kassel with the vision of improving steam technology. Today, steam locomotives are museum pieces, but Wilhelm Schmidt's idea is more relevant than ever and lives on in the engineering of the successor company Schmidtsche Schack.

By using the steam superheaters of Schmidt’sche Heißdampf, the fuel consumption of locomotives could be reduced while at the same time increasing their performance. Wilhelm Schmidt's invention contributed significantly to improve the economic efficiency of the steam technology. Increasing process efficiency by recovering energy and saving resources is still the basis of the work of Schmidtsche Schack today. “Our heat transfer solutions for the chemical, petrochemical and metallurgical industries continue to set the standards in reliability, process efficiency and quality,” says Karsten Stueckrath, CEO & President of SCHMIDTSCHE SCHACK. “111 years of experience, knowledge and commitment to quality are our foundation for developing and manufacturing customized solutions for our customers.”

In 1995, Schmidt’sche Heißdampf merged with "Rekuperator KG Dr.-Ing. Schack & Co", founded 1931 by Alfred Schack in Dusseldorf. Schack was a pioneer in improving the efficiency of processes by heat recovery in the energy-intensive processes of the steel industry. Since 2014, the legacy of their founders Alfred Schack and Wilhelm Schmidt is being carried on under the name SCHMIDTSCHE SCHACK | ARVOS to recover heat and make processes more efficient while saving resources.

10.08.2021 | LJUNGSTRÖM – Supporting customer operations with replacement equipment

LJUNGSTRÖM has successfully completed the replacement of large size horizontal type Ljungström gas-gas heater in Eastern Japan in an accelerated schedule.

A sintering plant at a major steel works in Eastern Japan had a horizontal design Ljungström gas-gas heater (GGH) that had been operating for more than 40 years. The GGH had a rotor diameter of more than 10 meters, and during the past 3-4 years had been facing mechanical problems resulting from the long term operation, and equipment that had exceeded its design life. There was an urgent need to replace the aged unit with new equipment, but the customer faced the difficult decision of avoiding a long plant shutdown and outage to replace the unit. Restrictions from the plant operational needs and local governmental pollution regulations, meant that a shutdown window of only 2 months was available to complete the replacement, which was far less than the typical 8 month construction period to dismantle an erect a new gas-gas heater.

After analysing the schedule and space restrictions at the site, LJUNGSTRÖM developed a new construction method to shorten the overall construction period to 60 days. The tight project schedule also accommodated restrictions imposed by the COVID pandemic, such as delays on sea transportation and customs clearance. LJUNGSTRÖM completed the site pre-assembly of a new rotor unit at a limited space beside the existing GGH ahead of the construction period while complying with laws and meeting the customer needs. During the shutdown outage, the old GGH unit was disassembled within the first week, allowing 7 weeks for the construction of the new gas-gas heater. Lifting the pre-assembled rotor parts and unit with a large crane, LJUNGSTRÖM smoothly completed the construction work within the scheduled time frame.

"This project is a great success, and demonstrates the capabilities and flexibility of LJUNGSTRÖM to support our customers in challenging projects. We accomplished this replacement GGH within the aggressive construction schedule due to the expertise, commitment and focus of our LJUNGSTRÖM employees." said Tomoharu Miyamoto, Managing Director, LJUNGSTRÖM Japan.

29.06.2021 | Consolidated financial statement ARVOS Group 2020/2021

Consolidated financial statement ARVOS Group 2020/2021

Luxembourg, June 29, 2021 – Arvos Group has completed the financial year 2020/2021 on March 31, 2021 with revenues of EUR 254 million in its two divisions Ljungström and Schmidt’sche Schack. Due to Covid19 related delays and hesitance of customers to place orders in times of uncertainties in the pandemic this was a reduction by 21.5% compared to the previous fiscal year (EUR 324 million). As the Group worked heavily on its profitability, including strong improvements of its cost base, earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization margins (EBITDA) could be kept at above 15% of sales.

For the current financial year, 2021/2022, we have to recognize an impact of the Covid19 pandemic still, especially in the first half of this financial year. But we are expecting significant growth for the full financial year. In the first two months we achieved double-digit sales growth already.

27.05.2021 | LJUNGSTRÖM - Expanding capabilities to provide turnkey service on competitors equipment

Expanding capabilities to provide turnkey service on competitors equipment

27-May-2021

LJUNGSTRÖM, a division of ARVOS Group, has successfully completed a major overhaul of 20 year old Rothemuhle-type air preheaters in Western Australia.

The 340MW Collie Power Station located in Western Australia started operation in 1999 with air preheaters supplied by Nitchitsu, Japan. The Rothemuhle air preheaters are a complex twin-flow design and one of the toughest to maintain due to the complexity of the design and rotating hood sealing arrangements. With significant operational problems plaguing the plant between overhaul periods, the customer was looking for a single service provider to solve all their problems.

After analyzing the equipment design and performance, LJUNGSTRÖM developed a turnkey package of technical solutions and upgrades that improved the equipment performance beyond the original OEM specifications. The latest technology in heat transfer elements were supplied in custom designed basket containers, to replace older legacy technology, along with a complete replacement of many of the sealing system components to effectively overhaul the air preheater to as-new condition.

LJUNGSTRÖM executed the project as a turnkey contractor to the customer who closely monitored all aspects of the project work, with close attention made to all Health, Safety and Environmental requirements. Upwards of 18,000 manhours were employed in the implementation of the entire solution, which was a significant achievement for the team in Australia during restrictions imposed by the COVID pandemic.

With completion of the project, significant performance benefits have been confirmed by the end user, and all guarantees were achieved, including a dramatic drop in losses due to leakage and fan power leading to considerable savings for the operators. “This is a key project for LJUNGSTRÖM to illustrate our capabilities and success of our solutions that can be applied to both Rothemuhle as well as LJUNGSTRÖM air preheaters. There is great interest in solutions that reduce operators maintenance cost, while stretching periods between replacement parts, and we are focused on helping customer achieve their operational goals” said Thomas Barwald, Managing Director, LJUNGSTRÖM Australia.

LJUNGSTRÖM continue to challenge the outdated practice of maintaining equipment without implementing the latest technology for improved performance and operation, and the successful turnkey execution of this project and the performance results achieved demonstrate the capabilities of LJUNGSTRÖM to offer products and services for non-OEM equipment.

21.12.2020 | SCHMIDTSCHE SCHACK - Project Verena

SCHMIDTSCHE SCHACK - Project Verena

 21-Dec-2020

Kassel, Germany. We always have been committed to develop trendsetting ideas. This is why we are all the more pleased to be part of the project VERENA in cooperation with the Technical University of Darmstadt, Technical University of Munich, Technical University of Bergakademie Freiberg and all the other involved industrial partners. Together we are working on advanced solutions to make the circular economy as efficient as possible. The modern economy is still based to a large extent on a linear economy in which non-recyclable products are manufactured from imported fossil raw materials and their disposal releases large quantities of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. In the VERENA research project, the research consortium coordinated by Darmstadt Technical University aims to make non-recyclable waste streams available as feedstock for basic materials in the chemical industry. To this end, the consortium is working on various gasification processes for the material and energetic use of various residues. In this way, the carbon cycle is closed.

Thirteen partners under the leadership of Darmstadt Technical University are investigating in this project how new basic materials for the chemical industry can be obtained from problematic residual materials. The VERENA research project has a total budget of EUR 11.1 million and is subsidized by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy with a grant of EUR 8.3 million.
Below are the partners from research and industry participating in this project: Technical University of Munich, TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Forschungszentrum Jülich, GTT-Technologies, VER Verfahrensingenieure, GKN Sinter Metals Filters, RWE Power AG, Mitsubishi Power Europe, Air Liquide, ARVOS GmbH | SCHMIDTSCHE SCHACK, Clariant and SUEZ.

Please find further details about the project VERENA in the CHEManager article.

First plant to turn household waste into jet fuel

29-May-2019

Project developer, owner and operator Fulcrum BioEnergy, headquartered in Pleasanton, California, USA, is currently constructing an industrial plant near Reno, Nevada, USA, that will produce renewable transportation fuel from household garbage.

The innovative approach is to use household waste as feedstock for kerosene fuel production.

At Fulcrum’s Sierra BioFuels Plant, municipal solid waste (MSW) is gasified, creating a synthesis gas which is processed and converted into a liquid produced by Fischer-Tropsch process to be further refined into synthetic jet fuel.

This plant is the first of its kind – worldwide - to convert garbage into jet fuel at a large scale.

SCHMIDTSCHE SCHACK | ARVOS in Kassel and Düsseldorf is responsible for the detailed engineering, the manufacturing and supply of the burner system, the syngas cooler system, including all internals, for a portion of the gasification system, as well as  several downstream pieces of equipment for steam superheating, slag and ash handling and ash cooling systems. The supervision of the installation also falls into SCHMIDTSCHE SCHACK | ARVOS' responsibilities.

When the Sierra BioFuels Plant is producing fuel in 2020, people living in the Reno region will no longer just produce simple household waste, but will also become a valuable feedstock supplier for the production of low-carbon, transportation fuels.

Energy efficiency solutions provider LJUNGSTRÖM settles patent infringement suit against manufacturer in China

03-Nov-2016

LJUNGSTRÖM is determined to protect its rights to its air preheater technologies. Some Chinese customers had made complaints about poor quality products that were found to be copycat versions of the LJUNGSTRÖM patented DNF® heating element. After identifying a manufacturer in South China who had been supplying an inferior copycat product, LJUNGSTRÖM filed a patent infringement suit in the Jinhua, Zhejiang court in early 2016.

A settlement agreement has been reached with the manufacturer to cease its infringement of LJUNGSTRÖM‘s patent and to pay substantial damages for past infringements. This proves once again that only LJUNGSTRÖM is in a position to supply genuine DNF® heating elements, manufactured to the quality standards and extended operational life required to meet the critical power needs of the people of China.

This is the first lawsuit LJUNGSTRÖM has initiated to protect its intellectual property in China.  “LJUNGSTRÖM is committed to providing proven technology and established, high-quality products that other suppliers are unable to match,” said Hybern Huo, Managing Director of LUNGSTRÖM’s Shanghai Unit. “We are trying to help Chinese power plants to avoid premature failure, downtime and operational issues that might be experienced with unlicensed and poor quality imitations of our technology.”

16.12.2014 | URS and ARVOS Group bring energy efficiency solution to coal-fired power industry

URS and ARVOS Group bring energy efficiency solution to coal-fired power industry

16-Dec-2014

URS and the LJUNGSTRÖM Division of ARVOS Group have signed an exclusive agreement to jointly develop, demonstrate, and market a novel approach to improve the energy efficiency of coal-fired power plants by 1 to 3 percent, with a corresponding reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

As a consequence, power plants can realize significant operational cost savings by burning less coal and generating less air pollution and coal combustion residual (CCR) wastes.

"We're pleased to be working exclusively with the leading supplier of Ljungström® air preheater technology to bring this efficiency solution to the power industry," said Sterling Gray, URS business development manager. "It offers a reasonable and cost-effective approach to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change, while lowering the cost of electricity generated from coal."

The approach involves combining URS' successful SBS Injection sorbent injection technology for sulfur trioxide (SO3) control with the proven air preheater technology of LJUNGSTRÖM.  Sulfuric acid and other acidic compounds found in coal combustion gas cause fouling and corrosion of the air preheater equipment. By eliminating these acids, the thermal performance and efficiency of a coal-fired power plant can be improved.

Long-term testing of the combined technologies at the LJUNGSTRÖM Division research facilities in Wellsville, N.Y., has shown recovery of thermal energy from combustion flue gases  to temperatures as low as 220°F;  an improvement in overall plant efficiency of as much as 3 percent, or about a 300 Btu/kW-hr heat rate reduction. Similar efficiency gains can be achieved at most power plants with relatively simple modifications to the air preheater. Furthermore, lowering the flue gas temperature exiting the air preheater can significantly increase the capture of mercury in existing air pollution control equipment, thereby reducing mercury emissions from the power plant.

"We're excited to partner with URS to offer this exclusive solution to the ever-changing challenges of plant operations and efficiency enhancement," said David Breckinridge, vice president of ARVOS Group's LJUNGSTRÖM Division. "Our combined experience and expertise offers our customers the latest technology to provide meaningful benefits in plant operations."

30.08.2021 | LJUNGSTRÖM – Doing our part to help lower NOx emissions

LJUNGSTRÖM – Doing our part to help lower NOx emissions

LJUNGSTRÖM continues to support the implementation of ultra-low emissions in the Chinese iron and steel industry with its gas-gas heaters (GGH) for flue gas Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) De-Nitrification plants. These SCR plants are typically a retrofit to the existing equipment at the iron and steel plants, and a vital part of the “Blue Sky Battle Plan” launched in 2018 to fight air pollution from industrial sources.

The Laiwu Iron and Steel Group Co. (Liagang Group) is a super large iron and steel complex with a production capacity of more than 10 million tons, and it is the largest production base in China for H-beams, gear steel, and powder metallurgy products.

LJUNGSTRÖM has completed the delivery and successful start-up of three (3) GGH units at the steel complex under aggressive and accelerated delivery schedules that required the support structure to be delivered within 60 days of the contract signing, and all remaining parts delivered within 90 days. Upon completion of the installation, commissioning and plant start-up the performance indexes of the GGH units met all the technical requirements of the contract, with the customer and plant owner thankful of the timely completion of the project and quality of the Ljungström® gas-gas heater equipment.

“We are excited that our equipment plays a key role in the reduction of air pollution in China, and continue to support customers with quality products that they can depend on. Our teams in Shanghai, Beijing and Nantong work tirelessly to meet our customer requirements and schedules.” said Haiming Li, Managing Director, LJUNGSTRÖM China.

29.05.2019 | SCHMIDTSCHE SCHACK - First plant to turn household waste into fuel
